Rally Against Racism

Commemorating the 90th Anniversary of the Christie Pits Riot

The Christie Pits Riot on August 16th, 1933 remains one of the worst outbreaks of ethnic violence and the largest race riot in Canadian history with over 10,000 participants and spectators.

The event occurred during a period of increasing anti-Semitic and anti-immigrant tensions in pre-war Toronto and ignited during a playoff baseball game involving the predominantly Jewish Harbord Playground team. Members of a local Nazi club flew a homemade swastika banner to cries of “Heil Hitler.”

Violence broke out as the Jewish players and fans battled members of the Swastika Club in order to seize the banner. The Italian players who had been similarly persecuted as recent immigrants answered the call to rally with the Jewish players and fight alongside them.

To read more about the Christie Pits Riot and its historic legacy of fighting intolerance and racism in Toronto, please visit this website.

Please join me for an event to mark the 90th Anniversary of the Christie Pits Riot to commemorate the occasion and ensure its historic legacy of communities joining to combat racism and hate.

The event will include Food, Music, Activities for Families, a Softball Game with Special Guests, and a Call to Action to Rally Against Racism.

Bring a lawn chair and a water canteen.

Date: Wednesday, August 16, 2023

Time: Gates Open for activities at 6:00 pm, Ceremony at 7:00 pm, First Pitch at 7:30 pm

Kay Gardner Beltline Trail CleanUp

The City has launched its 18th annual Clean Toronto Together: Spring Cleanup campaign.

On March 30, I joined Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie to announce this great LOCAL campaign which encourages Residents and Businesses to gather with their family, friends, schools, and community & faith groups to organize a litter clean-up between April 21-23.

Join my local Kay Gardner Beltline Trail Cleanup:

TIME: Sunday, April 23 from 10 am to 11 am

LOCATION: Meet in the parking lot of Larry Grossman Forest Hill Memorial Arena (340 Chaplin Crescent)

Join me on Sunday with your family and friends and help keep our Beltline Trail beautiful!

PLEASE RSVP USING THE FORM BELOW

If you have organized your own local cleanup, please let me know. I will be personally recognizing each Resident/group that joins in the spring cleanup campaign, so be sure to complete the below steps to let me know about your cleanup efforts:

  1. Complete the cleanup pledge form below so we know all about you/your team and why you’re getting involved.

  2. While you’re doing your cleanup, capture a photo and email it to Councillor_Colle8@toronto.ca

  3. Be sure to also register at https://www.toronto.ca/explore-enjoy/festivals-events/clean-toronto-together/ so that the City will know where you/your team plan to do your cleanup. This will help to avoid duplicate efforts so teams can cover as much of our City as possible.

Cycle the Allen Greenway

Cycle the Allen Greenway

A leisurely 10 km bike ride on Allen Greenway between Yorkdale Road and Eglinton Avenue West. The Allen Greenway is an evolving linear park/open space system on both sides of the Allen Road in North York. It was secured in the Lawrence Allen Secondary Plan and eventually will have a multi-use trail.

It is currently a combination of multi-use trails in parks, bike lanes, and on-street routes. It also overlaps with the proposed Northwest Cultural Trail.

We will discuss development applications along the route that provides the opportunity to upgrade sections of the trail to multi-use paths.

We will be adhering to all Toronto Public Health's COVID-19 guidelines. We ask all participants to practice physical distancing while in attendance.

Be sure to dress for the weather, and we recommend bringing your own water bottle and snacks for the ride.

Cycle the Proposed Northwest Cultural Trail

Cycle the Proposed Northwest Cultural Trail

  • Pioneer Village TTC (SW corner of Steeles and North West Gate) (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Cycle the proposed 25 km Toronto section of the Northwest Cultural Trail from end to end.

The Northwest Cultural Trail will connect 52 parks, more than 25 cultural attractions, three universities, and several rapidly growing planning areas and business improvement areas. You should be a confident cyclist as this is a combination of multi-use park trails, cycle tracks, bike paths, sharrowed lanes, bike lanes, and short unmarked sections on busy streets such as Dufferin Street and Bay Street. Although most of the route is paved there are some short unpaved sections on grass. There is also a detour around the Eglinton Crosstown construction.

We will be adhering to all Toronto Public Health's COVID-19 guidelines. We ask all participants to practice physical distancing while in attendance.

Please be sure to dress for the weather, and we recommend bringing your own water bottle and lunch for the ride.

The route parallels the west section of the Yonge/University line so if you want a shorter ride there are several TTC subway stations to leave the ride at.
